“Haiku” prayers, in Japanese poetical form, have their origin in the fourteenth century. They consist of 17 syllables arranged in three lines (5-7-5). This provides a simple format for composing personal and family prayers. The following haiku prayer is a Canadian example. You are encouraged to develop your own.
Blessed mother, pray
to Jesus for all the world,
pray to Him for us.
Life really does seem to press the fast-forward button as you get older. Days blur into weeks, and months into years until it’s nearly November and you’re racking your brain trying to remember exactly what it is that you have been doing for the past eleven months. It can get scary, and what do we here at Memebase believe is the best response to fear? Why, looking at a selection of memes, of course. The existential horrors seem a lot less horror-y when they are pacified with or in funny internet pictures, and it is an easy and attention-consuming way of taking your mind off the calendar for a while. No doubt that so long as the clock keeps ticking, we will all still have an appetite for the silly ways we have of distracting ourselves from that. We’ve got to be grateful that we’ve got that dilemma figured out.
Parents should know their kids better than anyone. I wouldn’t expect a mother or a father to be able to predict their kid’s every move, especially in adulthood, but I do expect that when their kid tells their parents who they are, they listen. The mom in this story didn’t do that with her 24-year-old daughter, who said she didn’t want a proper wedding after getting engaged to her fiancee. Her daughter, Lynn, is an alternative in many senses of the word; she graduated college for the first time at 16, has tattoos and piercings, and fully marches to the beat of her own drum. She reluctantly agreed to a wedding after her mom pressured her into it, but after one dispute over the flowers, she quickly went home and eloped. While her dad understands why she did that, her mom can’t get over her devastation over the elopement.
