Becoming a parent opens up a lifetime’s worth of difficult decisions, and when you’re raising your kids a lot of these relate to behavior management. It’s inevitable that children are going to act up at times, or even most of the time. How you respond to that can impact them massively.
This is part of the discussion that was raised when a dad queried the internet on how to proceed after his 8-year-old did something wrong. Revealing how the kid had broken a 75-inch TV screen and that he was searching for an “appropriate punishment”, some people were more than ready to open up their opinions on how he should react. It’s been 13 years since the first season of Dance Moms aired, and in hindsight, it’s wild that the show lasted more than one season, and we’re still talking about it today. We all know that reality TV has been exploitative since the genre’s inception, but until this Lifetime show, it wasn’t “rank a group of children on a pyramid from worst to best weekly” level of exploitative. According to Abby Lee Miller, ranking young dancers was supposed to motivate them to do better. She claimed that since high schools had valedictorians, so did dance studios. The only problem with that analogy is that high schools don’t post pictures of their valedictorians on the wall above all the other students and broadcast the humiliating failure of their lowest-ranking students to an international audience.
