Mapping in the Islamic Tradition—Fall Presentation
The Geography and Map Division and Philip Lee Phillips Map Society are hosting an in-person and virtual 2024 Fall Presentation on Islamic mapping.

Join the Library of Congress Philip Lee Phillips Map Society and Geography and Map Division on September 19, 2024, for our Fall Presentation with two talks on Mapping in the Islamic Tradition.

At 1:00pm Dr. Shah Mahmoud Hanifi, Professor of History at James Madison University, will discuss Surveying the Surveyors: Modern Maps of Afghanistan, and Their Critics.

At 3:00pm Dr. Karen Pinto, Associate Scholar of Religious Studies at University of Colorado-Boulder, will discuss Ṣūrat al-Arḍ: Ways of Seeing Islamic Depictions of the World and Beyond.

In-person attendees will enjoy a display of collection items curated by the Geography and Map and the African and Middle Eastern Divisions, and an acquisitions presentation from Geography and Map Division staff.
