We are all living in a golden age of mattress technology. I take it for granted that I can order a mattress right to my apartment in a box without going to a mattress store and have no problems with it. I am forever grateful that I was brought into this world after water beds went out of style. I have seen Edward Scissorhands, and I’m not confident that a similar situation would not happen to me if I had a bed filled with water (I can be a little clumsy with my scissors, what can I say?)

I take it even more for granted that I’m sleeping in a bed at all! To be honest, all this reflection is making me realize how comfy my life is. I could be sleeping on the floor every night! I could be sleeping on a bushel of hay in a barn. I love people who have a unique laugh. That is to say, I love myself. My laugh has gone through many iterations over the years. I think there was a time many years ago when I had a normal laugh, but once my Trixie Mattel-esque bird-esque scream laughing came into my life, I haven’t been the same since. Why is it that young humans love to roll in packs? You see this in schools the world over. Kids love roaming around town with other kids, marauding and haunting. I think it’s because there’s safety in numbers. It’s hard to be the odd one out when you have a friend group that will have your back. It’s also because groups usually have a social organization system you can easily fall into. There is usually a clear leader, who calls the shots and sets the tone. Then everyone else falls in rank and file, waiting to be told what to do (under the illusion that they could be the shot-caller themselves).

This gets less and less true as you get older. The group formations tend to fall away until you’re left with your own family unit, which is a pack unto itself. Then you get to watch your kids find their own crew, and the cycle continues.

Pobody’s Nerfect. Wait, I mean Nobody’s Perfect. Proving my own dang point. Everyone, and I mean everyone has flaws. Even Dolly Parton. She only made one Dollywood, and that’s a flaw. Part of being human is messing up. We sometimes hold opinions that we later learn to be based on false information. We hurt the feelings of others on accident, and sometimes on purpose. We push doors that say “pull” and we don’t always rewind the tape before we give it back to Blockbuster (for those old heads in the audience). And we wouldn’t want to be perfect. Perfect would mean that there’s nothing left to work on, no reason to get out of bed in the morning. Perfect would be inhuman.

What we can do, though, is approach perfection. Like that perfect slice of pizza that came right out of the oven– saucy, salty, cheesy, and chewy, all in the right proportions. Fleeting, but almost perfect.

I am so glad I grew up offline. Don’t get me wrong, I cherish and enjoy every single solitary second I spend on this sacred place we call “the internet.” However, I’m glad my uncensored access to the World Wide Web didn’t begin until I was 12. I still grew up during the era when little kids didn’t have phones, and we just watched the same episode of Hannah Montana over and over again to amuse ourselves. We were still frying our brains but with Cartoon Network instead of TikTok. Kids no longer go through the phase of having a flip phone during middle school before they’re responsible enough to handle having an actual smartphone. Whether you like it or not, we’ve built our society around phone dependency for literally every demographic. It’s not going away anytime soon, so you might as well enjoy every second of brain-smoothening entertainment that the internet has to offer.

I hate when I’m looking at my phone and laughing, and someone asks me, “What are you laughing at?” 9/10 times, I’m laughing at something that they do not care about or a joke they wouldn’t get. In that moment, I’m given three unappealing options. I could explain the joke, tell them, “Oh, it’s nothing,” or lie and say it’s some random meme. The majority of the time, I will pick #2 and try to salvage the conversation from there, but sometimes I boldly show them the tweet, meme, or text message in question.

These are the kinds of memes you wouldn’t feel embarrassed to show to an acquaintance after laughing at them a little too loudly in public. As a former Secretary of State and Presidential hopeful once said, “I’m just chilling in Cedar Rapids.” Chilling is such a powerful choice of words. It implies so much at once. It implies that not only are you hanging out, not doing much, but you’re also enjoying it. You can never be chilling and having a bad time. Chilling implies a level of cool, calmness, and collectedness that is hard to quite put into other words.

When drinks are chilling in the ice box, they’re cooling down, sure, but they’re also mellowing out, slowly becoming ready for consumption. But it’s not an overabundance of fun that the word suggests. It’s an even keel of positive feelings, neither rising above or dipping below a certain threshold. You can be “just chilling,” which means that you could be persuaded into doing something else. You can be nmjchbu, which is a brief way to keep a conversation going. You can be “chilling,” meaning that you would resent anything that threatens to change your stasis.

Having a positive relationship with your neighborhood and your neighbors is an important thing. You need the places you like to go in your neighborhood. Ideally, you need a coffee shop, a dry cleaner, a grocery store, and a hardware store. These are the places you need to identify in your first months of living somewhere.

Then, you need to discover the little special nooks and crannies of the place you live. The streets with pretty buildings, that one little park with the nice patches of light, that one house that always decorates for Halloween. These are the things that make you fall in love with your neighborhood. They make you enjoy the life you’re living, and you have a community you’re a part of.

People love to talk about the difference between surviving and thriving. Surviving, we say, Is just about having your basic needs met. You have a place to sleep, you’re getting up in the morning, you’re eating meals… but you’re not really enjoying it. You’re doing the bare minimum, but anything more than that seems impossible. Thriving, though, is all the basic tenets of surviving plus having fun while doing them.

This is ideally where we would like to be most of the time. We’re having fun, we’re growing, we’re pushing ourselves, and we’re doing a good job of all of the above. When you’re surviving, it can sometimes it can be hard to push yourself over into the realm of thriving. It may take a good friend shaking you up out of your glum, a vacation from your normal life, or just a commitment to going to the gym the next morning.

In 2025, we have access to literally every tendril of humanity, from any era and any location. All those options make it a little harder to answer this next question. What are your favorite things?

I’d say that one of my favorite things, and truly the crown jewel of the Internet, is meme culture. Maybe I’m biased (considering I look at memes every day for a living), but without memes, being online would be like slogging through a post-apocalyptic wasteland of bad mullets, gladiator cage fighting, and tyrannical governments–oh wait, are we still talking about the Internet phenomenon or Mad Max?

Either way, in a world that seems pitted against us, humor is the healthiest coping mechanism. And not all humor is from the gutter, in fact, the best kind of funnies are the smart and respectful kind. No need to be crude or gross to make a joke–we’re more clever than that!

I am not an adult enough to own my own filing cabinet. If I had to haul a 5-foot-tall behemoth of metal drawers up three flights into my new apartment, I would not be particularly excited about that. All of my important files are kept in a Rolodex in my mind. I know exactly where my passport and birth certificate are based on vibes alone, and no fancy 20th-century drawer contraption can do anything for me that I can’t do for myself.

In a way, the internet is its sort of filing cabinet. We bookmark all of our favorite websites to make them super easy to access. We open “files” on our desktops for quick access. Having a sense of humor is an invaluable quality. You don’t have to be a brilliant standup comedian to know that! Comedy is highly beneficial if you’re weak in other social skills. How many times have you heard the story of the nerdy class clown who was able to gain the respect of their fellow students through their biting sense of humor? I was 100% that kid when I was in high school. I took this John Waters quote extremely literally when I was a teen, and in some ways, I still do!

Humor is the most effective casual interpersonal way to get others on your side. It’s easy to get used to being “the younger generation.” I’m sure that when Baby Boomers transitioned from being young hippie free thinkers to yuppie Reaganites, it felt weird to no longer be the youngest generation. People cared about disaffected Gen Xers for a brief moment in the 90s, but since then, Millennials have dominated the generational discourse. I remember seeing a cover of Time Magazine hailing Millennials as “The Me Generation,” claiming they were uniquely obsessed with themselves. In hindsight, that is a silly analysis, considering how Boomers are similarly obsessed with themselves.

Every single “older generation” has had the same critiques of the younger generation for centuries: they claim they’re coddled and not as hard-working when that couldn’t be further from the truth. Luckily for millennials, there’s a new scapegoat in town. “Gen Z” as a term only took off in the last five years, and they’re now the superstars of the generation conversation. Unfortunately, that leaves millennials with a startling new reality: they are no longer “the younger generation.” Luckily for millennials, pushing 40 does not mean they can’t still enjoy their favorite activities, like not buying a house because of avocado toast and scrolling through hilarious memes!

I used to think that rotting in bed was just a colloquial internet phrase, but apparently, it is a real phenomenon people regularly do. Bed rotting is, according to Wikipedia,

“Bed rotting, or lying in bed, is a phrase for a social media trend wherein a person stays in bed for an entire day without engaging in daily activities and chores. Many who partake in bed rotting commonly spend their time on their computer or smartphone. The behaviour may have a negative impact in individuals experiencing sadness.”

I know what it means to rot in bed, and I support any of you doing it presently. It is the first day of the calendar year, for crying out loud! Why should we be up and running around like chickens with our heads cut off when we can enjoy the comforts of the bed? You probably didn’t have to work today. You probably have not had to work for the past week, and if anybody is mad at you for enjoying that time by recharging your human body, they can get out of town. If you are rotting in bed right now, these memes are a great way to spend that time.

If you celebrate Christmas, odds are that you went a little, as they say, hard in the paint when it comes to food. The holidays to me are nothing without food. It’s my one chance a year to be as decadent as I want to and not feel bad about it. Bring on the loaded baked potatoes, the cheese dip, the shortbread cookies, and the carrot cake. I’ll take it straight to the dome. It’s Christmas, I don’t care. I think this is a healthy attitude. You have to let yourself purely enjoy something every once in a while, you can’t have impulse control 365 days of the year.

But if you’re anything like me, you might be experiencing a bit of a comedown after the festivities. Maybe you’re only wearing loose-fitting clothing. We’ve got a lot of memes in the system here at Memebase. Most of them are floating around in one drawer or another, waiting to be used later. It’s my job to find all the memes stuffed in a filing cabinet and decide which ones deserve to breathe the sweet air of spring. It’s not always an easy decision. I have to look memes in the eye and tell them, “Sorry, old chap, maybe you’ll be put in a list of funny random memes next week.” It’s never fun news to deliver, but somebody’s got to do it.

The following memes are memes I have wholly neglected up until now. I had to blow the thick layer of dust off of them with a blow dryer. When that didn’t work, I had to get out the mini vacuum cleaner. Finally, they’re all cleaned up and ready for public consumption. I beg of you, please go easy on them.
