I would love to adopt an alien, like they did in E.T. It would be like having a pet but even better. Everyone has a pet, but not everyone has an alien. You could ask it all about its home planet and perhaps learn some of their language. You could see if it has any special capabilities that humans don’t have. The one drawback would be that you’d have to hide him from the government, lest they take it away to conduct tests. And you’d probably feel a little guilty that you were essentially kidnapping it from its home planet and thus depriving it of a childhood there, even if it wasn’t your fault.

Luckily these things are all explored in the film E.T., thus leaving us satisfied and touched. This is exactly what sci-fi is good for. It teaches us about improbable eventualities without us having to live them ourselves.

Having a sense of humor is an invaluable quality. You don’t have to be a brilliant standup comedian to know that! Comedy is highly beneficial if you’re weak in other social skills. How many times have you heard the story of the nerdy class clown who was able to gain the respect of their fellow students through their biting sense of humor? I was 100% that kid when I was in high school. I took this John Waters quote extremely literally when I was a teen, and in some ways, I still do!

“Anytime you make someone laugh or satirize something, it’s the best way to change someone’s opinion because they’re defenseless – they laugh, they listen.”

Humor is the most effective casual interpersonal way to get others on your side. Of course, you don’t want to take that too far and always try to perform for others desperately to get them to like you. That came with my class clown era, and I would 0/10 recommend it. Why is it a stereotype that sci-fi is enjoyed by people of a nerdy persuasion? I’m leaning into it with this very title. Is it the fact that smart people tend to enjoy it and smart people are seen as nerdy? Is there something inherently dorkified about liking robots? What’s a jock thing to like, action movies? There’s no denying that the stereotype exists. Close your eyes and picture a Star Wars fan. Odds are, you’re probably picturing a dude who wears glasses and collects figurines. In other words, a nerd.

But I’m here to say that it can’t only be a nerd thing because that would mean most of the world’s population are nerds. Sci-fi is one of the most popular genres of all time. Think about how insanely popular Dune is. If liking Dune makes me a nerd, then sign me up for Star Trek trivia night, and we can all look at these memes together.

I love a funny sci-fi movie. The Coneheads? Count me in. Palm Springs? Way ahead of you buddy. Weird Science? Don’t play with me like that. We don’t necessarily think of sci-fi as being funny since the high-flying adventure movies with big themes immediately come to mind, but who says you have to be humorless if you have lasers and robots? Lasers and robots can actually be extremely funny.

Even the more serious sci-fi films are improved by dashes of humor in them. Think of all the C3PO moments in Star Wars. Nobody would really classify Star Wars as a comedy, but dang it if I didn’t laugh out loud when R2D2 and Yoda are fighting over the candy bar in Empire.
