Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque, a French nun and mystic of the 17th century, is best known for her devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, which she claimed to have experienced in mystical visions. Born into a devout family in Burgundy, France, Margaret Mary entered the Visitation convent at Paray-le-Monial at a young age, where she devoted herself to a life of prayer and contemplation. It was during her time in the convent that she reported receiving a series of visions of Jesus Christ, in which he revealed his Sacred Heart as a symbol of his boundless love and mercy for humanity.
In her visions, Jesus instructed Margaret Mary to promote devotion to his Sacred Heart as a means of experiencing his love and obtaining divine grace. Despite facing skepticism and opposition from some within the church hierarchy, Margaret Mary remained steadfast in her mission, dedicating herself to spreading devotion to the Sacred Heart through prayer, writing, and personal example. She encouraged believers to practice acts of reparation and devotion, such as receiving Holy Communion, observing the First Friday devotion, and making regular visits to the Blessed Sacrament.
Margaret Mary’s devotion to the Sacred Heart ultimately gained widespread acceptance and popularity, thanks in part to the efforts of the Jesuit priest Claude de la Colombière, who served as her spiritual director and confessor. Following her death in 1690, Margaret Mary was canonized as a saint by the Catholic Church in 1920, and her feast day is celebrated on October 16th.
